About Putha Hiunchuli

Putha Hiunchuli (7,246m), also known as Dhaulagiri VII, is a remote 7,000-meter expedition peak in the Dolpa region of western Nepal. Far from the busier climbing areas of Everest and Annapurna, it offers a genuine expedition environment surrounded by the isolated landscapes of the western Himalayas.

First climbed in 1954, Putha Hiunchuli is considered technically more approachable than many major Himalayan peaks, but its altitude, remoteness and prolonged exposure above 6,000m make it a serious undertaking. Climbers require strong endurance, disciplined acclimatization and previous high-altitude experience.

Biodiversity of the Dolpa Region

Dolpa lies within the trans-Himalayan rain-shadow region, creating a distinctive environment of dry valleys, alpine plateaus, glacial rivers and high mountain terrain. Vegetation gradually becomes sparse with altitude, transitioning into rocky and glaciated landscapes toward Putha Hiunchuli.

The region provides habitat for Himalayan wildlife including blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, snow leopard, Himalayan wolf and numerous high-altitude bird species. Its isolation has helped preserve much of this remarkable mountain ecosystem.

Culture and Lifestyle of Dolpa

The approach to Putha Hiunchuli passes through remote communities where traditional mountain lifestyles remain strongly connected to the landscape. Dolpa has significant Tibetan cultural influence, with ancient Bon and Buddhist traditions forming an important part of local life.

Traditional stone settlements, monasteries, prayer walls, agricultural terraces and seasonal grazing areas give climbers an opportunity to experience a culturally distinctive part of Nepal before entering the high mountains.

Route and Climbing Challenge

Our Putha Hiunchuli Expedition follows the standard North Ridge route, with climbing operations beginning from Base Camp at approximately 4,940m. From Base Camp, we establish higher camps through progressive acclimatization rotations before committing to the summit attempt at 7,246m.

The route involves glacier travel, moderate snow slopes, fixed-rope sections and sustained movement at high altitude. While technically less complex than many Himalayan expedition peaks, its remoteness, cold and prolonged exposure above 6,000m demand strong physical conditioning and efficient movement.

Expedition Approach through Dolpa

Our approach through Dolpa provides gradual altitude gain and valuable natural acclimatization before climbing begins. The journey crosses remote valleys, traditional settlements and increasingly alpine terrain before reaching Base Camp.

Technical Climbing Preparation

Before entering the higher camps, we conduct practical preparation covering glacier travel, fixed-rope techniques, crampon and ice-axe use, equipment checks, camp procedures and summit strategy.

A Great Alternative to an Everest Expedition

For many climbers, Putha Hiunchuli is a smart and rewarding step before taking on a full Everest expedition. It has actual expedition experience at high altitude and is not as overrun or as difficult as technical difficulty is concerned. Climbers are able to gain the much needed mountaineering skills, understand how their bodies react to the altitude and gain confidence in a real Himalayan setup.

While an Everest expedition is often seen as the ultimate dream, Putha Hiunchuli offers a quieter and equally memorable adventure for those who seek wilderness, challenge, and authentic mountain exploration.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m)

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, our team will welcome you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel. The remaining time is for rest and recovery.

Day 02: Expedition Preparation & Briefing in Kathmandu (1,400m)

We complete expedition formalities, permit procedures, equipment checks, and a detailed climbing and safety briefing before departure.

Day 03: Fly to Nepalgunj (150m)

We take a domestic flight to Nepalgunj, the main transit point for our journey into the remote Dolpa region.

Day 04: Fly to Juphal & Trek to Dunai (2,475m)

We take a mountain flight to Juphal and begin our trekking approach through Dolpa toward Dunai.

Day 05: Trek to Tarakot (2,500m)

We continue through the remote valleys and traditional settlements of Dolpa, following the trail toward Tarakot.

Day 06: Trek to Mushi Khola (2,880m)

The trail takes us deeper into Dolpa as we gradually gain altitude and move toward increasingly remote mountain terrain.

Day 07: Trek to Kagkot (3,265m)

We continue toward Kagkot through isolated valleys and rugged Himalayan landscapes as our gradual acclimatization progresses.

Day 08: Trek to German Base Camp via Twin Passes (4,500m)

A demanding high-altitude trekking day takes us across the Twin Passes before reaching German Base Camp.

Day 09: Trek to Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp (4,940m)

We make our final approach to Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp, where our main climbing operations and preparations begin.

We spend the day resting, acclimatizing, checking equipment, and preparing for the first rotation above Base Camp.

We conduct practical training covering fixed-rope techniques, crampon and ice-axe use, glacier travel, and high-altitude climbing procedures.

Day 12: First Acclimatization Rotation

We begin our first rotation above Base Camp, gaining altitude and becoming familiar with the climbing route and terrain.

Day 13: Higher Camp Rotation & Acclimatization

We continue our acclimatization program at higher altitude, allowing the body to adapt progressively before the summit phase.

Day 14: Return to Base Camp (4,940m)

After completing the rotation, we descend to Base Camp for rest, hydration, nutrition, and recovery.

We monitor weather and mountain conditions while completing final equipment checks and planning the summit rotation.

Day 16: Begin Final Summit Rotation

We leave Base Camp and begin our final rotation, moving progressively toward the higher camps.

We continue upward along the established route, maintaining a controlled pace and conserving energy for the summit attempt.

Day 18: Final Summit Preparation

We move into position for the summit attempt and focus on rest, hydration, nutrition, and final equipment preparation.

Day 19: Summit Putha Hiunchuli (7,246m) & Descent

We begin our summit push during the early hours and climb toward the 7,246m summit of Putha Hiunchuli. After reaching the summit, we descend carefully toward the lower camps.

Day 20: Descend to Base Camp (4,940m)

We complete our descent to Base Camp, where we rest and prepare for the return journey through Dolpa.

Day 21: Trek from Base Camp toward Kagkot

We leave Base Camp and begin retracing our approach route through the remote mountain landscapes of Dolpa.

We continue descending through the valleys and settlements of Dolpa toward the lower elevations.

Day 23: Trek to Juphal

We complete the final section of our return trek and reach Juphal, marking the end of the overland expedition journey.

Day 24: Fly Juphal – Nepalgunj – Kathmandu (1,400m)

We fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj and connect with our onward flight to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, we transfer to the hotel.

Day 25: Final Departure

Our team will arrange your transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport according to your international flight schedule.

Note: The high-camp rotations and summit schedule from Day 10–19 remain flexible and may be adjusted according to acclimatization, weather, route conditions, and the condition of the team.
